What are good internships for undergrads studying e-commerce and digital marketing?

This question was suggested to Internset by Quora to help undergrads in e commerce and digital marketing find internships that genuinely build skills and portfolios by clarifying which roles and teams provide measurable learning.

Well known companies across retail, consumer software, healthcare supply, and social platforms consistently hire e commerce and digital marketing interns. Roles often span data science, product management, software engineering, user experience, merchandising, revenue and pricing, and category operations. The common thread is hands on work that ties directly to traffic, conversion, and revenue.

Large retailers such as Home Depot, enterprise suppliers such as Medline, consumer software firms such as Gen Digital, social platforms such as TikTok, and smaller specialty brands such as In Sattva are examples of employers that commonly host these internships. Titles and team names vary by company, but the core responsibilities are similar and centered on measurable business impact.

Day to day work typically includes running paid campaigns, improving product pages and Brand Stores, building or maintaining dashboards, optimizing pricing and promotions, cleaning catalog data, and supporting checkout and funnel experiments. Interns collaborate with supply chain, marketing, marketplace, and technology teams, which provides a broad view of how e commerce engines really operate.

Strong candidates are comfortable with a modern tool stack. Expect to use GA4, Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager, TikTok Ads, Amazon Seller Central, and Shopify, plus SQL or advanced Excel for analysis. If the role is more analytical, basic Python or R helps, and for reporting, tools like Tableau or Looker are common.

Evaluate any internship by looking for clear ownership and defined KPIs, for example CTR, CVR, ROAS, CAC, and LTV. Ask about the scope you will own, the data you can access, the cadence of reviews, and who will mentor you. Favor roles that let you present findings to stakeholders and that have a credible path to a return offer.

To stand out when applying, bring a concise portfolio with two or three quantified wins. Examples include a listing SEO project with before and after metrics, an ads test with uplift and cost controls, or a checkout experiment with a stated confidence level. Show your process, the numbers, and the lesson you would apply next time.
