What do you need for a Novartis internship in the US?

This question was suggested to Internset by Quora to help college students and recent graduates in the United States understand the eligibility criteria, qualifications, and key requirements needed to apply for paid internship opportunities at Novartis.

To qualify for most internship roles at Novartis in the US, applicants are generally expected to be enrolled in an accredited college or university or to have recently graduated. For current students, being in your junior or senior year often gives you an edge, especially for summer internships. Recent graduates who have completed their degree within the past 12 months are also eligible for many internship roles, as long as the role specifically allows it.

Academic background plays a key role in the selection process. Novartis looks for students from a wide range of disciplines depending on the internship type. This can include pharmacy, biology, chemistry, business, finance, computer science, data science, engineering, and even marketing or communications. Having a strong academic record with a GPA above 3.0 is generally preferred, but it’s not the only deciding factor.

What matters just as much is relevant experience and a clear passion for the field. Even if you haven’t worked in pharma before, showing involvement in research projects, student organizations, or volunteer roles that demonstrate curiosity, responsibility, and initiative can make a real difference. Internships at Novartis are competitive, but they are also structured to be inclusive and developmental. If you’ve got a growth mindset and a willingness to learn, that counts for a lot.

Please note that for some roles, U.S. work authorization is required, and depending on the department, there may be technical or software-specific skills they look for as well.

Now that you know the requirements, it’s time to look ahead. Novartis offers a wide range of internship opportunities across research, data science, marketing, clinical operations, and more. These programs are designed to give students and recent graduates meaningful, hands-on experience in real-world settings. Whether you’re aiming to work in labs, explore healthcare strategy, or contribute to innovation, there’s a path waiting for you.
