What projects do GAIL sustainability interns work on?

Internset sheds light on the meaningful work GAIL’s sustainability interns and trainees take on within one of India’s leading energy companies, giving a clear view of how their efforts contribute to environmental performance, ESG reporting, and data-driven corporate responsibility, and what makes this internship genuinely practical and impactful.

One of the primary projects involves ESG gap assessment. Interns evaluate GAIL’s sustainability and Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) against global benchmarks such as GRI and ISSB. They identify missing disclosures, incomplete data, and misalignments with reporting standards. This exercise directly influences how GAIL refines its future sustainability reports and improves ESG ratings.

Trainees also assist in drafting chapters for GAIL’s annual Sustainability Report, particularly for sections dealing with energy use, emissions, water management, and employee safety. They gather data from multiple operational sites and ensure that content aligns with both Indian regulatory frameworks and international sustainability norms. The process teaches them how corporate reporting works in practice, how words, data, and validation tie into one credible disclosure.

Another significant project area is data modeling and calculation. Trainees build and update Excel models that track key performance indicators across GAIL’s 40+ sites. These models calculate metrics like air emissions, energy consumption, water discharge, waste management, and GHG intensity. The job requires a sharp eye for accuracy because these figures form the backbone of the company’s audited sustainability data.

Interns are also involved in mapping BRSR questions to departments. Since BRSR requires detailed responses from multiple units, they help distribute and track data requests. They learn how a large organization coordinates sustainability information flow between technical, HR, safety, and environmental divisions. This mapping exercise gives them a true sense of how data is collected, verified, and compiled across a massive enterprise.

GAIL gives trainees exposure to the auditing process as well. During third-party assurance cycles, they observe how external auditors verify sustainability claims, flag inconsistencies, and suggest improvements. They see first-hand what transparency means in corporate reporting and how ESG audits intersect with business reputation and investor confidence.
