First-year engineering students have a plethora of winter internship opportunities available to them, contrary to popular belief. While some employers prefer to hire third-year students due to their more extensive coursework, many are open to hiring first and second-year students as interns. Winter internships are generally less competitive than summer ones, making them an excellent opportunity for first-year students to gain hands-on experience early in their university career.

There are several ways for first-year engineering students to find winter internships. They can search online job boards, attend career fairs, or contact companies directly. Some universities also offer internship programs that match students with employers. Additionally, students can consult with their college career counselor for potential leads or send proposals to companies in their area.

As of October 29th, 2023, there were 188 engineering winter intern jobs available. Companies such as Formlabs, Teradyne, Amazon Services LLC, and Tesla were among those offering internships. These positions ranged from R&D Engineering Intern to Software Development Engineer Internship, Data Analyst Internship, and more. The roles were spread across various locations, including Somerville, MA, Agoura Hills, CA, Seattle, WA, and Fremont, CA.

We’d also suggest you check the Microsoft Discovery Internship Program. Other notable internships included the Student Training in Engineering Program (STEP), which focuses on technical development in a complex, independent environment. However, this program is more competitive and requires students to have completed at least two college computer science courses.
