I’m a first-year civil engineering student at Andhra Pradesh VRSE CLG, but I want to switch to ECE, CSE, IT, AI, or ML. Can someone assist me with the process?

This question was asked by Lutukurthi Sarada, who is currently studying civil engineering in the first year at Andhra Pradesh VRSE CLG and seeks guidance on changing their branch to ECE, CSE, IT, AI, or ML.

This is indeed possible, but it’s important to note that the process can be challenging and requires meeting certain prerequisites.

Firstly, it’s crucial to understand that changing your branch is not an uncommon occurrence. Many engineers, after gaining sufficient experience in their initial field, often consider switching to other roles or specializations. For instance, civil engineers may transition into roles such as engineering consultants, providing advice on various engineering difficulties faced by clients.

In terms of the different branches you could switch to from civil engineering, options include Architecture and Mechanical Engineering. Architecture involves the design and planning of buildings and structures, often overlapping with civil engineering in areas like structural design. On the other hand, Mechanical Engineering involves the design, development, and manufacturing of mechanical systems, such as engines, machines, and tools.

However, if you’re interested in fields like ECE, CSE, IT, AI, or ML, you would need to meet specific requirements. For example, to be eligible for a branch change from Civil to CSE, a student must score at least 206 out of 210-grade points. This process is highly competitive, as you would be competing with over 1000 IITians for just 8 seats.

The prerequisites for making a branch change to the CSE department may vary from one institute to another. Generally, you must have a CGPA of at least 9.0, a valid reason for wanting to change your branch, and there must be vacancies in the branch you wish to switch to. Additionally, some institutes may require you to pay an application fee for the branch change.

It’s advisable to contact your college academics to get detailed information about the branch change criteria in your institution. Remember, the decision to switch branches should be well-thought-out, considering your interests, career goals, and the challenges involved in the process.
