What happens if we fail in assessments in Cognizant internship?

This question was suggested to Internset by Quora to shed light on what happens if an applicant fail Cognizant’s assessments, giving students a realistic idea of the consequences and how to move forward.

Cognizant builds its internship around a series of learning modules, each ending with an assessment that proves you can apply the material in a setting that feels close to real client work. If you do not clear one of these tests, the company does not immediately end your internship. Instead, you are routed into a remediation period. A technical mentor reviews your weak spots, perhaps inefficient SQL queries or missed security checks in Java code, and assigns focused lab work along with extra office hours. You usually get another shot at the test within a week or two.

When the retest is also unsuccessful, your role shifts from project ready to what many interns call the shadow track. You attend stand-ups and observe delivery rituals but you do not take on billable tasks. Your stipend continues while managers watch whether the additional coaching is helping. Plenty of interns bounce back at this stage by treating the time like an intensive boot camp and using peer study sessions plus Cognizant Academy.

A third miss triggers a formal review with the internship program office. HR and delivery leads weigh your overall contribution, including attendance and collaboration, against current business needs. Sometimes they move you to a less time-sensitive practice such as content management support. If no suitable slot exists, Cognizant ends the internship early. You receive a participation certificate instead of a completion certificate and are not shortlisted for a pre-placement offer.

Even in that scenario you are not blacklisted. Your profile stays active for a year, and you may reapply after strengthening your skills through coursework or campus projects. Recruiters see persistence in candidates who return with a stronger portfolio, and many former interns eventually land full-time roles on their second attempt.

This is your chance to learn from experts, contribute to real projects, and gain the kind of experience that recruiters actually value. Explore internships at Cognizant today.
